1. Cheers to this weekend!

I’m a few minutes late (haha) but happy fiesta Butuan City! Today we celebrated the Balangay Festival or the Feast of San Jose. (?) We aren’t the type to join the crowd for the city events (ie parade, Jason Abalos chorva, Mutya events, etc) though, so instead we held lunch for a couple guests. Lechooon! :D

Tomorrow we will be heading somewhere up north (I forget the name of the place), to visit a mini-zoo and then head off to the beach. Looking forward to holding a baby tiger! Hihi.

Only a couple more weeks left to summer, and I intend to milk it of all that it’s worth. Hahaha

  2. I’m still waiting for pending OSCE results (hello, ophtha and orl), but until then, I’m officially on summer break!

Today was dedicated to quick chores and me-time. I rented a toga for grad (yuck I keep forgetting that we’re “graduating” soon), and paid for a full kit of clerk stash (because I shall be a #clerkbyjune11. Haha di naka-get-over sa hashtag. :P). Also returned a friend’s set of post cards, finally. Haha.

And then me-time! Originally just a reservation at the newly-opened Montalbo at UN Ave, it turned into a full-fledged oh-shit-clerkship-soon-celebration. Haha. I also spent time in CBTL reading something NOT related to med. It has become a yearly tradition, really, to prove to myself that I too can spend time in a coffee shop but not study. You know, like normal people. Haha. And lastly, foot spa and pedicure. Because I miss being a girl. :)

Now to indulge myself on long-overdue TV catch-ups. Hihihi. :D

Edit: HAHAHA Ok, see you again ORL. Oh well papel. :))

  3. Obligatory Boracay text post.

How lucky are we that we get to enjoy field work while lounging in one of the country’s hottest tourist spots.

This text post serves as sort of my journal entry, since 1) it’s much easier to type than to write down anything with a pen (doctor’s penmanship slowly developing!) and 2) I don’t keep a journal. Haha. Plainly for documentation’s sake, in case I forget. Which I doubt. :P

    Sunday, Feb 26, 2012

All 20 of us left for Kalibo around 1PM. From there we rode a 2 vans to Caticlan. Then a boat to Boracay Island, then finally multicabs to get to the resort we were going to live in for the next couple of days. They had 20 rooms with 10 beds each, and 4 of those were ours.

Right after we arrived we immediately aimed for water, a couple minutes walk from the resort. We didn’t even bother unpacking. Hehe. We were just in time to witness the gorgeous sunset. Our first dinner, as a whole block in Boracay, was at Big Mouth. After dinner some of us went on to Club Paraw and Guilly’s Island. Others played card games at our rooms. We tucked in around 2:30AM. Haha.

    Monday, Feb 27, 2012

This was the day 4B separated from 4A, because we had different hospitals to interview. Early morning breakfast was at Andok’s, after we played Frisbee. After that we went swimming again. Goggles were a must-buy for me since I was wearing contact lenses. Simultaneously, while “chilling”, we also took the time to survey the locals and tourists regarding health care in the island. We had lunch at Backyard BBQ where we shared large platters of seafood and meat, called SHE. Around 3PM we headed for the District Hospital to interview. It took us around 3 hours tops, but we got all the information and documents we needed. We then had dinner at Plato d’ Boracay (lots of food for cheap!), then lounged at the BomBom Bar. They had a nice acoustic band playing, and the lighting was …idk, intimate? It was dim and red, not too dark for it to be intimidating. Just enough for it to be cozy and appropriate for people-watching and star-gazing. Hehe.

    Tuesday, Feb 28, 2012

We rose extra early to ride a trike to Station 1 where we took a swim. Same island but somehow better and finer sand. I don’t get it either. Haha. Afterwards we had a big breakfast at Jonah’s where I ate a tuna/cheese omelette and banana-choco-peanut milkshake. Yum.

We then went on to different activities. Some of us went parasailing, but since I’m such a coward when it comes to heights, I chose the other options instead. We first rode the Banana Boat, for 180php. There were 11 of us so we got the double-banana kind. Less likely to topple over, thus safer for me. Although nahulog pa din si JF. Hehe. Helmet Dive came next, for 250php. The “helmet” was super-kaduper-25kg-heavy, and we were maybe around 15ft below sea level. We were given small pieces of bread to hold to attract the fish. Photos should be up soon, I haven’t seen them yet either. Hoho. Then we went island hopping, 2200php for a group of 12. First stop was for lunch, which took us more than an hour because of the poor service. Tsk. Snorkeling at another island next, and then just playing in the sand on another island. By the time we were back, we were exhausted.

But we weren’t ready for the day to end just yet, so we lounged at Azzuro (?) Restaurant while waiting for the sun to set. For dinner we had a buffet at La Carmela Resort, which was relatively cheap at 270php, I think. Most other buffets costed 500php. Videoke and fire dancing afterward cost me 50php (best 50 pesos ever spent on Boracay!). Some of us then tried Summer Place, but it wasn’t my thing, so I left early. There were so many foreigners there, I felt like I was the minority. Hahaha. While walking home we star-gazed a bit. I missed watching stars. I couldn’t do that here in Manila. This day was the longest day of all, I was up from 6AM to 4AM the next day. Haha.

    Wednesday, Feb 29, 2012

This is the day we left Boracay, so after a quick brunch at Andok’s and Jonah’s, we left to go souvenir shopping. 12 pieces of keychains for 150php and 2 t-shirts for 170php, not bad. I also got a henna tattoo; a star is on my wrist and a sun tribal symbol of some sort is on my ankle. I really wanted “infinite” in cursive, but the man said that would’ve looked better with permanent ink. :( We got our last buy from Boracay: kalamansi cupcakes, then finally packed and left for the port via trike. From there we rode a fastbreak to the terminal where our van waited for us. At the airport I had a quick lunch of rice topping, and then we boarded the plane (where the girls all watched the cute flight attendant HAHA).

And then all too soon I was back in Manila and gearing for our report. Aww.

  4. Simple Plan: Get Your Heart On!
Concert tour, Live in Araneta Coliseum, 1122012
I am a fan, though I wouldn’t have picked their concert for my first one if it weren’t for my fangirl sister. But still, no regrets, especially since today’s Anesth exam (for which I wasn’t able to study because of this concert HAHA) was easy enough (in short, sobrang scott lang).
Reignited memories of teeny-bopper angst during high school. Hehe. Any random song of theirs keeps on suddenly popping into my head today. LSS-ing a whole discography? Hahaha :)

  5. Back in Manila. :(

I’ve been doing this for almost 9 years now (since HS), and still it gets lonely. It’s better now that at least I have my sister with me. Been cleaning and restocking the unit, and now to deal with homework. Tsk.

The taxi driver kanina was very nice though. He was so talkative; I can practically tell his entire life story now. Haha. It’s always refreshing to talk with strangers who speak with no holds barred. :D

  6. I met a nice stranger today.

It was already 4PM and I was in a cranky mood for most of the day, so I needed a pick-me-up. I entered Starbucks, found a table and fell in line. The man next to me looked down at me (literally, because I am shorter than most people haha), and asked if I was a nurse. He was foreign, (European probably, from what I can tell from his accent), past his midlife crisis (I’d guess in his 60s), with a round nose, kind eyes, sparse white hair and a warm smile. It was a fairly long line and I could tell he was getting impatient waiting a while, thus the conversation. I answered that no, I was a medical student. And so started the stories. He told me about a friend he had who also studied medicine, and how she took 6 years. She’d lug 5 heavy books at a time, looking half-asleep for most of the day. For her practicum, he unknowingly became her patient, and he joked about that. He also told me about when she finally graduated and became a doctor in a hospital, she was assigned to be in-charge of an entire floor of patients (although I can only imagine how spacious and patient-less that hospital must be, as compared to PGH, where one floor will be the death of you. Haha). In return I told him that I didn’t have 6 years of medicine, I had 7, and how this was already a shortcut. I said I was only there for an hour break to possibly study but really just doodle on my notebook. I also told him how nowadays we rely on gadgets like iPod to read our textbooks rather than literally bringing them with us to the hospital. He was quite impressed with this, although he got concerned for when we lose battery power or something. He even joked that he knew there was no lovelife in medicine, and so for now I’m married to my iPod. Hahaha. That was mostly what we talked about, really. I didn’t even bother asking him why he was in the Philippines, and whether or not he was enjoying himself. He has filled almost 2 Starbucks cards, so I assume he’s been here a while. Hehe.

When we finally got our drinks, I invited him to sit with me since I didn’t bother coming with anyone, and seats were rare in this Starbucks branch. He declined saying he had some friends to meet anyway. I saw him again after an hour, only to exchange a few more words before he really did leave for his hotel.

It’s nice to talk to strangers, when they really do seem harmless. (Because you have to admit, some are just creepy, or hard to talk to because of the language barriers). While chatting with him I let go of the stress I felt that day, and I felt better after. It’s ironic how it was a stranger who alleviated my crankiness today. Rarely ever happens.

It was nice to have met you, Bernie. :)

  7. Thankful.

Today was such a long day, but it can’t go without documentation. Through blog. HAHA.

Three words to describe today, besides thankful: heartwarming, giddy and young. It sounds like a cheesy teenage romantic comedy. Far from it.

Heartwarming. As I have mentioned last night, this morning was spent at Banawe, Quezon, at the Fe del Mundo Memorial Hospital, to spend time with the LIFE (Leukemic Indigents Fund Endowment) foundation, UP MSS’ year-long partner. I honestly don’t think I’m great with children, and I spent the first few minutes hiding behind the table and making conversation with the volunteers instead of the kids, who really were just as shy. Hehe. After a while they warmed up to us and were able to participate in the activities a little more. I was mostly standing by, watching the hosts and trying to engage the crowd but not exactly actively playing with the children. A little girl to my left had an empty seat beside her. She wore a mask over her nose and mouth, but the rest of her was dressed so loudly. Yes, loud, easiest way I can explain it. Bright orange headband with a large stuffed toy on it. Big yellow sunglasses. Striped knee-high socks. You wouldn’t think she was sick by the way she looked, really. The mask gave her away. She took my hand and tugged. I turned and asked her what she wanted, thinking she might be thirsty or something. But she just tugged again until I came to sit beside her. Aww. My heart swelled, hehe. The blind, faithful trust of children will always be amazing. A tiny hand holding yours will always make you feel protective. It hurts to think of the pain that chemotherapy causes them, and I’m grateful that the LIFE Foundation gives them not only financial benefits, but also psychosocial support as well. Money can only get you so far, what these kids need most, I think is love (oo corny na, pero totoo naman talaga eh diba? We all want love when we’re hurting). After a couple of games and plenty of prizes, we had lunch and chatted with them a little. We then taught them how to make paper cranes. *Make a thousand cranes and your wish will come true* :)

Giddy. We’re graduating this year. SORT OF. Hahaha. Intarmed Class 2014 will be “graduating” with a degree in BS Basic Medical Sciences this SY, and so we had our yearbook photoshoot at the Relans Photostudio near UST. It was an expensive package, but they do not disappoint. They’re well staffed with an accommodating and talented set of people, they have the necessary props and costumes you may want, and they have a lovely lounge area. Color me impressed. Anyway, of course we’d be giddy. It took us 5 long years to get here, and we’re not even done yet. Palusot lang para magpaganda at magpapicture. HAHA. I miss iMed. The entire 2014’s great too, but there’s just times that it’s better when you’re a close-knit group of 40 kids. Iba pa din experience ng iMed.

Young. After the shoot we had street food for merienda and then watched Happy Feet 2. I might have spent a quarter of the movie just squeeling over how adorable the baby penguins are. I cannot explain how tangential and funnily vague this movie was. The writer must have had a short attention span. HAHA. Pero still funny. Soundtrack will be downloaded. :D

  8. 2 Things that gave me Bad Vibes today:

    1. Personally I try not to hold conversations while inside an elevator. Or at least I speak in inside voices only, if needed. I don’t understand why other people don’t seem to mind that random strangers get to know their flight schedule, or what they had for dinner, or why their boyfriend broke up with them. Bitch, I don’t care, shut the hell up, the elevator ride won’t last 5 minutes, geez

    2. I find it irritating when people claim na sorry, pwedeng iba muna gumawa, madami pa ako gagawin eh. Hello, magkaklase tayo, pareho tayo ng schedule, tayo lahat madaming ginagawa. And if extracurriculars man yun, di siya enough reason. You signed up for whatever that is, panindigan mo na. If you can’t multitask, then you shouldn’t have joined extracurricular na lang sana. Pfft.

  9. Last Friday Night

I was going to write about this yesterday, but the internetz was teh suckage; it was out the entire weekend grabe! :|

Friday was when my sister flew home for semestral break. Seeing as I didn’t have this break (and wouldn’t, ever again, huhu), I went looking for other things to entertain myself with. I don’t remember when I was last alone, so this was new. (We have a helper, but she doesn’t count. Hehe).

Classes ended early, so that afternoon was spent watching Melissa and Joey and playing with make-up. HAHA. I like Sabrina, pero antanda niya na pala! Haha. I intentionally skipped dinner, and went over to Vermont for Block5’s fundraiser. Horror flicks in exchange for funding of their management trip. I forgot I was going to spend the night alone in the bedroom until about halfway through The Grudge, stoopid. The Grudge was the first movie where I got really seriously frightened. I watched it during my sophomore year in high school, twice in a cinema I think, kasi libre. HAHA. Big mistake, I ended up becoming frightened of our dorm hallways, and couldn’t go to the comfort rooms by myself for a long time. Tsk. But on hindsight I don’t think it was a very scary movie at all (just loud music and ugly pasty white make-up); perhaps at the time I just didn’t watch a lot of horror movies yet.

After one movie, we left for Mercato. YEY finally, that pushed through. It gets tiring when you keep wanting to do things and it never happens. This time it did, yeee. Spent a lot of money, which, now that I think of it, is hypocritical of me, seeing as I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on Yakimix too. It didn’t amount to as much money as it would have if I did go to that buffet, but still, same concept eh, diba. Hehe. Ah well, at least the food was good, the company was great, and it was a once-in-a-while thing anyway.

What we bought and shared: (I don’t really know what everything was called, since we all got different things separately. I’m just assuming names, based on what they tasted or looked ike. Haha)

(beef?) Kebab, Bite-sized beef and tuna tacos (I especially liked the tune in the malunggay tacos. Hehe), stuffed pizza, some pesto pasta, and seafood paella.

For dessert: Medchef’s carrot date and moist chocolate cake. Cookie dough mochi. Caramel sea salt and candied bacon ice cream. I really wanted to buy macarons to take home, but I decided it too expensive, and besides, I’d be eating it alone, so I got creamcheese brownie and chocolate revel bars instead. Haha. Then I washed it all down with a wintermelon juice drink.

  10. I just realized how little I know of this city.

And I’ve been here 4 years now. But I can’t commute by myself anywhere, for the life of me. Yes, even to SM Manila, which is probably just a 5-minute ride away. My knowledge of Manila is literally just limited to the block surrounded by Pedro Gil, Padre Faura and Taft Avenue. Haha.

I guess I’ve always wanted to go out and explore, but never alone. While it’d be interesting to just walk around by myself and see where my feet take me, my paranoia hits me every time. I don’t want to end up lost.

Even Davao where I spent my high school years in, I never actually traveled much. I kind of just expected to be able to know the place eventually, since I knew I’d be spending so much time there. Guess not.

Time for a change, yes? I should be more adventurous, geez.

  11. I want to be one of those people who put badges on their blogs claiming that I’ve sworn to read the written word. Or something to that effect.

I am a bookworm, and have been since grade school. Nowadays I seem to go around with always at least one book unfinished, and Goodreads has me going through at least 3 books a month. Ayun nga lang, because I’m such a kuripot, I always just end up actually buying books that I really really really want, or I spend time with my bookie best friend, Booksale. Haha. Most of the books I’ve read are either borrowed or digital. More recently I’ve gotten the hang of reading from my phone, which is so convenient because anytime I’m bored or waiting I can just whip it out and continue reading. Hee. Ano pa kaya ngayong may larger screen na ako from ipod. *squee*.

Currently I’m in the middle of Old Magic, and just started Pride and Prejudice. :D

  12. Videoke Celebration for the September babies of Lippincott!

    Haba ng title, teh! Haha

We had 5 birthday celebrators this month, and so we decided to pool our finances and treat the block in one bongga event, imbis na patingi-tingi. Videoke at QQBox! Even the nasty rain and powerful winds didn’t stop (most of) us. We were there for almost 6 hours, who knew how many songs we’ve sung. 18 bottles of beer (and 2 glasses of iced tea for me and ches hehe) later and we’re singing our tiny little hearts out. Hahaha what fun. Wala na akong boses.

Kapal ng fez natin magdetox, guys. Gitna ng school year, gitna ng Big 4, nakakailang detox na tayo. Haha. If this is what LUV is about, then I’m not complaining.

    Here’s to more! Cheers. :D

  13. It doesn’t even matter that it was my birthday; the very fact that my parents were here and we get to spend a few days together as a complete family automatically makes it a great time. Nothing beats family time, especially when that comes only a few times a year, we make sure that every moment is well spent. :)

  14. Happy happy day!

Happy start to the epic weekend, actually! Last night’s FATE was graaand! Except for several minor major glitches with the technicals (haha sorry na talaga, di na mauulit) and a few dead-air moments, the event was still great. I enjoyed a lot, and hopefully so did everyone else. And the sponsors, dami! Haha. Nagulat ako, yumaman naman tayo bigla. :))

And today I woke up early to spend the day with friends. Roadtrip to UPDil, where we had long conversations and catching-up over yummy coffee, and “cultured” ourselves with paintings at the Vargas Museum. Hihi. It isn’t very often that I do artsy, sophisticated things like going to a museum. Last time I did anything close to that was last December’s Peter Pan Ballet. It isn’t that I don’t like doing those things, for some reason the opportunities just don’t present themselves as often. Or tamad ako. Yun siguro. :))

After that we had lunch at Gravy Fix. Pomegranate chicken with walnuts and salad. Wicked oreos! Yummyyy! <3

After that, we went to Bambang for some not-really, but-only-slightly needed med supplies.

And now I’m finally going to be able to try Pottermore! Yehesss. I’ve had it since Thursday but I got too busy on Friday with OB end-of-rotation exams and FATE that I had no time to. Now! :D

  15. Look at those cool 90’s kids. Hahaha

Look at those cool 90’s kids. Hahaha
